DESCRIPTION

A compelling pair of expressive sumi ink paintings attributed to renowned Japanese artist and ceramicist Shiro Tsujimura (born 1947).

Titled “Wolf” and “Cloud” on labels affixed to the reverse, each composition is formed through vigorous, spontaneous passages of black ink. Broad, saturated brushstrokes alternate with softer washes, scattered droplets, and open areas of the ground, conveying the freedom and immediacy associated with Tsujimura’s painting and calligraphic practice.

Each work bears a small red seal within the composition. The paintings are handsomely presented under glass in coordinating black frames, with white mats and restrained gold fillet borders. Their monochromatic palette and strong graphic presence work especially well in contemporary, Japanese, wabi-sabi, and minimalist interiors.

Shiro Tsujimura is internationally recognized for his unconventional approach to Japanese ceramics. A self-taught artist, he also works extensively in painting and calligraphy, approaching ink with the same physicality, spontaneity, and sensitivity to natural materials evident in his ceramics.

The works have not been removed from their frames and have not been examined outside the mounts. Please review all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the condition description.

ATTRIBUTION NOTE

The attribution and titles are based upon labels attached to the reverse and the red seals visible on the works. No certificate of authenticity or additional provenance presently accompanies the pair. They are therefore conservatively offered as “attributed to Shiro Tsujimura.”
