Balinese Kamasan Wayang Textile Painting – Hindu Mythology Chariot Procession

A richly detailed Balinese Kamasan-style textile painting depicting a dramatic narrative scene from the Hindu epic tradition. Painted on cloth in the distinctive wayang style of Bali, the composition features elaborately dressed figures, attendants and warriors traveling among horse-drawn chariots beneath ceremonial parasols.

The painting is executed in a particularly attractive palette of indigo blue, warm ochre, black and cream, with extraordinarily dense patterning throughout the costumes, chariots, landscape and decorative borders. Kamasan painting takes its name from the village of Kamasan in Klungkung, Bali, an important center of classical Balinese painting. Traditionally, these works illustrated episodes and characters from Hindu literature and mythology, particularly the Ramayana and Mahabharata.
