19th Century Tibetan Painted Leather-Clad Trunk with Iron Fittings

Description
A rare and highly decorative Tibetan storage trunk, dating to the 19th century, constructed of wood and clad in leather with hand-painted ornament and hand-forged iron fittings.

The front is richly decorated with dense geometric and floral motifs in deep red, black, and muted gold tones, centered by an aged painted medallion. Iron straps, corner mounts, carrying hardware, and an elaborate central lock plate give the trunk a strong architectural presence.

The leather surface has developed a beautifully timeworn patina, with cracking, abrasions, paint loss, and oxidation consistent with age and use. The exterior was cleaned at some point in its history and appears to have received a clear protective coating, possibly lacquer or varnish. The ironwork also appears to have been stabilized with a clear finish.

The interior retains its textile lining, while the back is undecorated.

Acquired in the late 1970s by a Dallas, Texas collector.

An exceptional decorative object with both sculptural presence and practical function, suitable as a low table, blanket chest, storage piece, or statement object in an eclectic interior.

Condition
Good antique condition with substantial age-related wear. Cracking and splits to the leather, areas of paint loss and abrasion, oxidation and wear to the iron fittings, and general surface irregularities throughout. Evidence of an older clear protective finish over portions of the painted surface and ironwork. Please review photographs carefully as they form part of the condition description.
