Antique Chinese Art Deco Pictorial Rug, Tianjin, c. 1920s–1930s

A wonderfully atmospheric antique Chinese Art Deco rug, dating to the early 20th century, circa 1920s–1930s.

Hand-knotted in China, the rug features a beautifully muted sage-green field framed by a deep aubergine/plum border. Scattered throughout are traditional Chinese decorative motifs including flowering branches, vessels, floral arrangements, and small auspicious objects.

The unusually open composition and asymmetrical placement of the motifs are characteristic of the Chinese Art Deco carpets produced during this period, particularly those associated with the Tianjin (Tientsin) weaving centers.

The softened colors and naturally worn surface give this rug considerable character and an appealing, timeworn quality. Its long, narrow proportions make it particularly versatile for use in an entryway, beside a bed, in front of a cabinet or console, or displayed as a decorative textile.

Condition

Antique condition with wear consistent with approximately a century of age and use. The rug exhibits areas of pile wear, fading and discoloration, scattered visible foundation, minor soiling, and some fraying along the edges. The wear contributes to the rug’s wonderfully mellow, authentic antique appearance.
