Antique Chinese Red Lacquer Valuables Box with Metal Lock Plate
Description
A handsome antique Chinese red-lacquered wooden box dating to the late Qing dynasty or early Republic period, circa 1890–1930.
The box is constructed with dovetailed corners and features a recessed panel lid, warm reddish-brown lacquered surface, old metal hinges, and a large circular metal lock plate with a decorative lobed hasp. Its compact size suggests it was likely used to store seals, jewelry, personal papers, money, writing accessories, or other small valuables.
The surface retains attractive age and character, including scratches, rubbing, edge wear, and scattered lacquer losses. The interior is plain and shows additional evidence of long use. The original locking mechanism appears incomplete or lacking its key/pin.
A strong decorative object with genuine age, useful scale, and understated Chinese character.
