Jack Levine “Geisha with Attendant” — Facing East, c. 1970

An evocative work by noted American artist Jack Levine (1915–2010) depicting a Japanese geisha accompanied by an attendant.

Created circa 1970 as part of Levine’s Facing East series, the composition reflects the artist’s fascination with Japanese culture following his travels in Japan. The figures are rendered with Levine’s characteristically expressive, fluid handling, combining delicate color with loosely drawn black lines against a muted ground.

The work is a phototypie and pochoir, reproducing Levine’s original gouache, watercolor, and crayon composition. The handwritten-style inscription at lower right reads “Geisha with Attendant.”

Jack Levine was an important American Social Realist painter and printmaker whose works are represented in major museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, and Art Institute of Chicago.
