Product Description
A wonderfully atmospheric pair of antique Chinese carrying baskets, crafted in wood and finely woven bamboo with remnants of their original deep red lacquer surface.
Dating to the late Qing to early Republic period, circa 1890–1930, these utilitarian baskets would traditionally have been used for carrying or storing food and household goods. Each features a rectangular woven body, fitted top, and tall arched carrying handle.
The larger basket is especially handsome, with a scalloped carved border surrounding the woven top panel and a broad double-section handle. The smaller companion retains a more rustic surface, with extensive wear that speaks to generations of practical use.
The old red lacquer has mellowed beautifully, revealing layers of darkened wood, exposed grain, and natural patina. Together, the two baskets make a striking decorative grouping and offer an authentic example of Chinese provincial craftsmanship.
Excellent displayed on a console, kitchen shelf, tabletop, or incorporated into a collection of Asian folk art and antique objects.

Condition
Good antique condition with substantial age-appropriate wear, rubbing and losses to the original lacquer, surface darkening, scratches, and evidence of long use. The smaller basket shows heavier wear to the handle. Woven bamboo panels remain visually attractive.
The worn surface and irregularities are part of the character and authenticity of these antique utilitarian objects. Please review photographs carefully for condition.
